cdc01845df tick/sched: Preserve number of idle sleeps across CPU hotplug events
commit 9a574ea9069be30b835a3da772c039993c43369b upstream.

Commit 71fee48f ("tick-sched: Fix idle and iowait sleeptime accounting vs
CPU hotplug") preserved total idle sleep time and iowait sleeptime across
CPU hotplug events.

Similar reasoning applies to the number of idle calls and idle sleeps to
get the proper average of sleep time per idle invocation.

Preserve those fields too.

d65cade544 tick-sched: Fix idle and iowait sleeptime accounting vs CPU hotplug
commit 71fee48fb772ac4f6cfa63dbebc5629de8b4cc09 upstream.

When offlining and onlining CPUs the overall reported idle and iowait
times as reported by /proc/stat jump backward and forward:

cpu 132 0 176 225249 47 6 6 21 0 0
cpu0 80 0 115 112575 33 3 4 18 0 0
cpu1 52 0 60 112673 13 3 1 2 0 0

cpu 133 0 177 226681 47 6 6 21 0 0
cpu0 80 0 116 113387 33 3 4 18 0 0

cpu 133 0 178 114431 33 6 6 21 0 0 <---- jump backward
cpu0 80 0 116 114247 33 3 4 18 0 0
cpu1 52 0 61 183 0 3 1 2 0 0 <---- idle + iowait start with 0

cpu 133 0 178 228956 47 6 6 21 0 0 <---- jump forward
cpu0 81 0 117 114929 33 3 4 18 0 0

Reason for this is that get_idle_time() in fs/proc/stat.c has different
sources for both values depending on if a CPU is online or offline:

- if a CPU is online the values may be taken from its per cpu
  tick_cpu_sched structure

- if a CPU is offline the values are taken from its per cpu cpustat
  structure

The problem is that the per cpu tick_cpu_sched structure is set to zero on
CPU offline. See tick_cancel_sched_timer() in kernel/time/tick-sched.c.

Therefore when a CPU is brought offline and online afterwards both its idle
and iowait sleeptime will be zero, causing a jump backward in total system
idle and iowait sleeptime. In a similar way if a CPU is then brought
offline again the total idle and iowait sleeptimes will jump forward.

It looks like this behavior was introduced with commit 4b0c0f294f
("tick: Cleanup NOHZ per cpu data on cpu down").

This was only noticed now on s390, since we switched to generic idle time
reporting with commit be76ea614460 ("s390/idle: remove arch_cpu_idle_time()
and corresponding code").

Fix this by preserving the values of idle_sleeptime and iowait_sleeptime
members of the per-cpu tick_sched structure on CPU hotplug.

b2125926ba timers/nohz: Switch to ONESHOT_STOPPED in the low-res handler when the tick is stopped
commit 62c1256d544747b38e77ca9b5bfe3a26f9592576 upstream.

When tick_nohz_stop_tick() stops the tick and high resolution timers are
disabled, then the clock event device is not put into ONESHOT_STOPPED
mode. This can lead to spurious timer interrupts with some clock event
device drivers that don't shut down entirely after firing.

Eliminate these by putting the device into ONESHOT_STOPPED mode at points
where it is not being reprogrammed. When there are no timers active, then
tick_program_event() with KTIME_MAX can be used to stop the device. When
there is a timer active, the device can be stopped at the next tick (any
new timer added by timers will reprogram the tick).

ae4f109b95 tick: Detect and fix jiffies update stall
commit a1ff03cd6fb9c501fff63a4a2bface9adcfa81cd upstream.

On some rare cases, the timekeeper CPU may be delaying its jiffies
update duty for a while. Known causes include:

* The timekeeper is waiting on stop_machine in a MULTI_STOP_DISABLE_IRQ
or MULTI_STOP_RUN state. Disabled interrupts prevent from timekeeping
updates while waiting for the target CPU to complete its
  stop_machine() callback.

* The timekeeper vcpu has VMEXIT'ed for a long while due to some overload
  on the host.

Detect and fix these situations with emergency timekeeping catchups.

3cc7935d32 tick/common: Align tick period during sched_timer setup
commit 13bb06f8dd42071cb9a49f6e21099eea05d4b856 upstream.

The tick period is aligned very early while the first clock_event_device is
registered. At that point the system runs in periodic mode and switches
later to one-shot mode if possible.

The next wake-up event is programmed based on the aligned value
(tick_next_period) but the delta value, that is used to program the
clock_event_device, is computed based on ktime_get().

With the subtracted offset, the device fires earlier than the exact time
frame. With a large enough offset the system programs the timer for the
next wake-up and the remaining time left is too small to make any boot
progress. The system hangs.

Move the alignment later to the setup of tick_sched timer. At this point
the system switches to oneshot mode and a high resolution clocksource is
available. At this point it is safe to align tick_next_period because
ktime_get() will now return accurate (not jiffies based) time.

107ea1f63b tick: Get rid of tick_period
[ Upstream commit b996544916429946bf4934c1c01a306d1690972c ]

The variable tick_period is initialized to NSEC_PER_TICK / HZ during boot
and never updated again.

If NSEC_PER_TICK is not an integer multiple of HZ this computation is less
accurate than TICK_NSEC which has proper rounding in place.

Aside of the inaccuracy there is no reason for having this variable at
all. It's just a pointless indirection and all usage sites can just use the
TICK_NSEC constant.

No point in doing calculations.

   tick_next_period = last_jiffies_update + tick_period

Just check whether now is before tick_next_period to figure out whether
jiffies need an update.

Add a comment why the intentional data race in the quick check is safe or
not so safe in a 32bit corner case and why we don't worry about it.

2884595932 tick/nohz: Fix cpu_is_hotpluggable() by checking with nohz subsystem
commit 58d7668242647e661a20efe065519abd6454287e upstream.

For CONFIG_NO_HZ_FULL systems, the tick_do_timer_cpu cannot be offlined.
However, cpu_is_hotpluggable() still returns true for those CPUs. This causes
torture tests that do offlining to end up trying to offline this CPU causing
test failures. Such failure happens on all architectures.

Fix the repeated error messages thrown by this (even if the hotplug errors are
harmless) by asking the opinion of the nohz subsystem on whether the CPU can be
hotplugged.

c4ff3ffe01 tick/nohz: unexport __init-annotated tick_nohz_full_setup()
commit 2390095113e98fc52fffe35c5206d30d9efe3f78 upstream.

EXPORT_SYMBOL and __init is a bad combination because the .init.text
section is freed up after the initialization. Hence, modules cannot
use symbols annotated __init. The access to a freed symbol may end up
with kernel panic.

modpost used to detect it, but it had been broken for a decade.

Commit 28438794aba4 ("modpost: fix section mismatch check for exported
init/exit sections") fixed it so modpost started to warn it again, then
this showed up:

    MODPOST vmlinux.symvers
WARNING: modpost: vmlinux.o(___ksymtab_gpl+tick_nohz_full_setup+0x0): Section mismatch in reference from the variable __ksymtab_tick_nohz_full_setup to the function .init.text:tick_nohz_full_setup()
The symbol tick_nohz_full_setup is exported and annotated __init
Fix this by removing the __init annotation of tick_nohz_full_setup or drop the export.

Drop the export because tick_nohz_full_setup() is only called from the
built-in code in kernel/sched/isolation.c.

0806f19305 tick/nohz: Use WARN_ON_ONCE() to prevent console saturation
commit 40e97e42961f8c6cc7bd5fe67cc18417e02d78f1 upstream.

While running some testing on code that happened to allow the variable
tick_nohz_full_running to get set but with no "possible" NOHZ cores to
back up that setting, this warning triggered:

        if (unlikely(tick_do_timer_cpu == TICK_DO_TIMER_NONE))
                WARN_ON(tick_nohz_full_running);

The console was overwhemled with an endless stream of one WARN per tick
per core and there was no way to even see what was going on w/o using a
serial console to capture it and then trace it back to this.

Change it to WARN_ON_ONCE().

330c1ee7d5 tick/sched: Remove bogus boot "safety" check
[ Upstream commit ba8ea8e7dd6e1662e34e730eadfc52aa6816f9dd ]

can_stop_idle_tick() checks whether the do_timer() duty has been taken over
by a CPU on boot. That's silly because the boot CPU always takes over with
the initial clockevent device.

But even if no CPU would have installed a clockevent and taken over the
duty then the question whether the tick on the current CPU can be stopped
or not is moot. In that case the current CPU would have no clockevent
either, so there would be nothing to keep ticking.

Remove it.

bca37119c5 tick-sched: Clarify "NOHZ: local_softirq_pending" warning
Currently, can_stop_idle_tick() prints "NOHZ: local_softirq_pending HH"
(where "HH" is the hexadecimal softirq vector number) when one or more
non-RCU softirq handlers are still enabled when checking to stop the
scheduler-tick interrupt. This message is not as enlightening as one
might hope, so this commit changes it to "NOHZ tick-stop error: Non-RCU

3c8920e2db tick/nohz: Narrow down noise while setting current task's tick dependency
Setting a tick dependency on any task, including the case where a task
sets that dependency on itself, triggers an IPI to all CPUs. That is
of course suboptimal but it had previously not been an issue because it
was only used by POSIX CPU timers on nohz_full, which apparently never
occurs in latency-sensitive workloads in production. (Or users of such
systems are suffering in silence on the one hand or venting their ire
on the wrong people on the other.)

But RCU now sets a task tick dependency on the current task in order
to fix stall issues that can occur during RCU callback processing.
Thus, RCU callback processing triggers frequent system-wide IPIs from
nohz_full CPUs. This is quite counter-productive, after all, avoiding
IPIs is what nohz_full is supposed to be all about.

This commit therefore optimizes tasks' self-setting of a task tick
dependency by using tick_nohz_full_kick() to avoid the system-wide IPI.
Instead, only the execution of the one task is disturbed, which is
acceptable given that this disturbance is well down into the noise
compared to the degree to which the RCU callback processing itself
disturbs execution.

Set ->irq_config to 1 for the IRQ_WORK items which are invoked in softirq
context so lockdep knows that these can safely acquire a spinlock_t.

e5d4d1756b timekeeping: Split jiffies seqlock
seqlock consists of a sequence counter and a spinlock_t which is used to
serialize the writers. spinlock_t is substituted by a "sleeping" spinlock
on PREEMPT_RT enabled kernels which breaks the usage in the timekeeping
code as the writers are executed in hard interrupt and therefore
non-preemptible context even on PREEMPT_RT.

The spinlock in seqlock cannot be unconditionally replaced by a
raw_spinlock_t as many seqlock users have nesting spinlock sections or
other code which is not suitable to run in truly atomic context on RT.

Instead of providing a raw_seqlock API for a single use case, open code the
seqlock for the jiffies use case and implement it with a raw_spinlock_t and
a sequence counter.

e44fcb4b7a sched/vtime: Rename vtime_accounting_cpu_enabled() to vtime_accounting_enabled_this_cpu()
Standardize the naming on top of the vtime_accounting_enabled_*() base.
Also make it clear we are checking the vtime state of the
*current* CPU with this function. We'll need to add an API to check that
state on remote CPUs as well, so we must disambiguate the naming.

ae9e557b5b time: Export tick start/stop functions for rcutorture
It turns out that rcutorture needs to ensure that the scheduling-clock
interrupt is enabled in CONFIG_NO_HZ_FULL kernels before starting on
CPU-bound in-kernel processing. This commit therefore exports
tick_nohz_dep_set_task(), tick_nohz_dep_clear_task(), and
tick_nohz_full_setup() to GPL kernel modules.

01b4c39901 nohz: Add TICK_DEP_BIT_RCU
If a nohz_full CPU is looping in the kernel, the scheduling-clock tick
might nevertheless remain disabled. In !PREEMPT kernels, this can
prevent RCU's attempts to enlist the aid of that CPU's executions of
cond_resched(), which can in turn result in an arbitrarily delayed grace
period and thus an OOM. RCU therefore needs a way to enable a holdout
nohz_full CPU's scheduler-clock interrupt.

This commit therefore provides a new TICK_DEP_BIT_RCU value which RCU can
pass to tick_dep_set_cpu() and friends to force on the scheduler-clock
interrupt for a specified CPU or task. In some cases, rcutorture needs
to turn on the scheduler-clock tick, so this commit also exports the
relevant symbols to GPL-licensed modules.

902a9f9c50 tick: Mark tick related hrtimers to expiry in hard interrupt context
The tick related hrtimers, which drive the scheduler tick and hrtimer based
broadcasting are required to expire in hard interrupt context for obvious
reasons.

Mark them so PREEMPT_RT kernels wont move them to soft interrupt expiry.

Make the horribly formatted RCU_NONIDLE bracket maze readable while at it.

08ae95f4fd nohz_full: Allow the boot CPU to be nohz_full
Allow the boot CPU/CPU0 to be nohz_full. Have the boot CPU take the
do_timer duty during boot until a housekeeping CPU can take over.

This is supported when CONFIG_PM_SLEEP_SMP is not configured, or when
it is configured and the arch allows suspend on non-zero CPUs.

nohz_full has been trialed at a large supercomputer site and found to
significantly reduce jitter. In order to deploy it in production, they
need CPU0 to be nohz_full because their job control system requires
the application CPUs to start from 0, and the housekeeping CPUs are
placed higher. An equivalent job scheduling that uses CPU0 for
housekeeping could be achieved by modifying their system, but it is
preferable if nohz_full can support their environment without
modification.

6f9b83ac87 cpuidle: Export the next timer expiration for CPUs
To be able to predict the sleep duration for a CPU entering idle, it
is essential to know the expiration time of the next timer. Both the
teo and the menu cpuidle governors already use this information for
CPU idle state selection.

Moving forward, a similar prediction needs to be made for a group of
idle CPUs rather than for a single one and the following changes
implement a new genpd governor for that purpose.

In order to support that feature, add a new function called
tick_nohz_get_next_hrtimer() that will return the next hrtimer
expiration time of a given CPU to be invoked after deciding
whether or not to stop the scheduler tick on that CPU.

Make the cpuidle core call tick_nohz_get_next_hrtimer() right
before invoking the ->enter() callback provided by the cpuidle
driver for the given state and store its return value in the
per-CPU struct cpuidle_device, so as to make it available to code
outside of cpuidle.

Note that at the point when cpuidle calls tick_nohz_get_next_hrtimer(),
the governor's ->select() callback has already returned and indicated
whether or not the tick should be stopped, so in fact the value
returned by tick_nohz_get_next_hrtimer() always is the next hrtimer
expiration time for the given CPU, possibly including the tick (if
it hasn't been stopped).

e1e41b6ce5 timekeeping: Consistently use unsigned int for seqcount snapshot
The timekeeping code uses a random mix of "unsigned long" and "unsigned
int" for the seqcount snapshots (ratio 14:12). Since the seqlock.h API is
entirely based on unsigned int, use that throughout.

35728b8209 time: Add SPDX license identifiers
Update the time(r) core files files with the correct SPDX license
identifier based on the license text in the file itself. The SPDX
identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the
full boiler plate text.

This work is based on a script and data from Philippe Ombredanne, Kate
Stewart and myself. The data has been created with two independent license
scanners and manual inspection.

The following files do not contain any direct license information and have
been omitted from the big initial SPDX changes:

timeconst.bc: The .bc files were not touched
  time.c, timer.c, timekeeping.c: Licence was deduced from EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL

As those files do not contain direct license references they fall under the
project license, i.e. GPL V2 only.

80d20d35af nohz: Fix local_timer_softirq_pending()
local_timer_softirq_pending() checks whether the timer softirq is
pending with: local_softirq_pending() & TIMER_SOFTIRQ.

This is wrong because TIMER_SOFTIRQ is the softirq number and not a
bitmask. So the test checks for the wrong bit.

Use BIT(TIMER_SOFTIRQ) instead.
